Blackamoor statues and sculptures have a long history in decorative art dating back to the 17th century Italy and the famous sculptor Andrea Brustolon (1662-17320).  From an era when Northern Africans served as chief stewards of Venetian noble homes.  Typically the rare and often quite exquisite pieces depict the Northern African dark skin in contrast with extravagant attire in impressive poses. At the time these pieces became popular the Moors had a strong presence in Europe.  They were employed as servants, bodyguards, and trusted heads of grand houses.  Blackamoor statues reflect a high regard of the people they depict. In this spirit their likeness became the subject of an artistic movement decorating homes throughout Europe.  Today these pieces scarce and highly collectible.
